What's In Your Book Basket?

I have learned something about my family...WE LOVE BOOKS! The library is one of our favorite destinations. Check out The Happy Housewife for more wonderful book suggestions! I am enjoying adding to my library list.

  • Harris Finds His Feet by Catherine Rayner. Cute, but not as good as Guess How Much I Love You, which has similar illustrations.
  • Seymour and Henry by Kim Lewis - NOT recommended! Cute illustrations, but the story line is how the two ducks disobey mother duck when she tells them to come out of the water. They swim away and hide...Funny? I think not. I changed the words and the cute little ducks got in trouble.
  • Hickory Dickory Dock by Keith Baker. Held my sons' attention, but it got old saying Hickory Dickory Dock that many times.
  • Crocs! by David Greenberg. I didn't like this book. Hard to read and had scary-looking crocodiles. Maybe my boys are just too young for this one.
  • Red Red Red by Valeri Gorbachev. Our favorite this week! Very clever. My son couldn't wait to see what Turtle was going to see. My son picked out the red items in each beautiful illustration.

The "Red, Red, Red" book looks like it would be a great one for my 2-year old ds - I may have to put that one on hold at our library.

Ha! That is hilarious that you changed the words! We'll be avoiding that one!
Hmmm.... but I have to wonder if my oldest would enjoy the croc book!

Nice, I like your commentary on each book. Helps me feel included on what the boys are learning during the day!

I also got a kick out of you changing the words to get the little ducks in trouble -- I have done the same thing before when I didn't like the way the author was heading. So, so funny!

Kayla loves being read to, and I love reading so that works out well. I found a couple of Amelia Bedelia books at a missionary moving sale so I picked them up remembering how much I liked them. After reading them to Kayla, I realized they were for someone a little older because she couldn't understand the "word usage" issues Amelia Bedelia has. Like "draw the drapes" where AB drew a picture of the drapes -- I tried to explain the two meanings of draw and quickly gave up. I figured those books would be for later, but the next time I told Kayla to get books for me to read, she got those and insisted those were the ones she wanted. That was so funny to me because she doesn't get the humor in them, but it isn't going to hurt for her to hear the context of using words differently -- that's how kids learn. :-)
